Language is a poet’s instrument. This class focuses on developing dexterity and creativity with the rhythm, texture, and tonal qualities of language. Students will break language down to its melodic and percussive elements, and explore rhythms and sounds from diverse, sometimes unusual sources. Exercises are designed to broaden students’ rhythmic palettes and their sense of play with the grain and weave of their works. Attention is also paid to vocalization strategies.
Note: This workshop is recommended for poets who wish to experiment with the sound qualities, and performative aspects, of their work.
Classes run 8 weeks and meet once a week in 2 hour sessions.
This class meets on location at the Poetry Center of Chicago, located in the Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E Washington St., Pedway East. After registering you will receive an email with further instructions.
